Batman, Tim Burton’s 1989 revival, follows the life of billionaire-turned-vigilante Bruce Wayne.  Witnessing the violent murder of his parents by a mugger on the streets of Gotham City, the child Bruce vows to personally fight crime.  He dons the gothic armored suit of a bat to strike fear into their hearts.  Meanwhile, the criminal upper class is ruled by crime boss Grissom.  When Batman involves himself in a mafia war, underboss Jack Napier is horribly scarred.  Swept up in the insanity that is Batman, he reinvents himself as the super villain grotesque—Joker.
