X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Written by David Benioff and Skip Woods

Wolverine breaks mutants out of prison

When I first started to hear about this, I was thinking, wait didn’t I see X-Men 1 and 2?  Another Wolverine movie… really?  My hopes were low and I did actually avoid seeing the leaked copy.  I wasn’t very excited about the movie anyway, so why waste 4 hours watching it twice?  I just waited ’till the theatrical release.

Now, while watching this movie I did see something right in the opening credits that I didn’t notice the whole time during trailers.  OMG Richard Donner is the executive producer.  I saw that and started to get a little hope… maybe even a little giddy.  If you don’t know who I am talking about watch Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut or even The Goonies.  That’s right, he is an amazing director and just having his name was all I needed to calm my bitter anxiety.

Gavin Hood will take the wheel in the directors chair for this one.  David Benioff and Skip Woods will write this comic adaptation in a way that is supposed to translate it to the silver screen.  Hugh will return as Wolvie, but Sabertooth will be headed by Liev Schrieber.  A quick note: I am cool with actors not looking like the comics really, as long as they give me the attitude I feel I read.  And Liev, no complaints here, I like your Creed.

Wolverine movie poster

There is a softer side of Logan and this really seems to portray it.  In the end he does become a little more angry and I like that side much better.  I really don’t see him as the “flowers and candy” type, but he does come off that way from time to time.  I mean, he is drinking a beer not wine and cheese.  There are a few origins that are slipped in this movie and some well placed cameos, I must say.  For the purist, many of the origins are changed in strange ways and some powers are made a little more excessive than normally portrayed.  There is nothing wrong with this and I didn’t mind at all, with one exception.  Don’t worry you’ll see it.

And I do say that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is worth the price of admission and my 107 minutes.  Many of the fight scenes are very fun to watch, but oddly, Wolverines claws always seem a bit of a cheesy after effect.  Strangely I thought they had figured that out a few movies ago.  Some witty one liners make some appearances, and they even go for some plot twists to keep it from being completely linear.  Yea I didn’t see that coming, sure. Not great not bad either.  0-4, I’d slap a 2 on this.

Have fun.
